The Civil Aviation Authority of Nigeria (NCAA) summoned a number of telecommunications providers to a meeting recently to discuss airfield safety violations following the erection of communication masts which interfere with aircraft operations.

Globacom - one of the newest players in the global mobile telecoms industry, recently installed communications masts along aircraft approach routes without seeking clearance or following any required standards. These masts were highlighted as being in prime position to interfere with signals being received by landing aircraft - possibly resulting in an air crash.

The NCAA gave Globacom 24hours to reduce the height of the masts in these affected locations. Although they do have the legal backing to remove the masts at the providers cost, sources say a peaceful resolution would always be sought in the first instance.
